Lesson by L Davies

Learning Intentions:

  • To create a comic strip to show the journey of Ellen MacArthur.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

You will see as part of this activity pupils can use an online resource to create a comic strip. However, parent/carer will need to set this up for your child if you wish to use it. Alternatively, you can complete the activity using pen and paper.

There is a short video about the life of Ellen MacArthur approximately four minutes long.

This lesson will follow on from the oral activity ‘The Journey of Ellen MacArthur Part 1’.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This lesson will follow on from the oral activity ‘The Journey of Ellen MacArthur Part 1’. In this lesson, you will create a comic strip showing part of Ellen’s journey sailing around the world. Watch the video below to remind yourself of Ellen’s life.

During the video you may want to make some notes more specific to her journey around the world. You can also refer back to your previous notes. You are going to be creating a comic strip which includes a combination of pictures, text and speech bubbles. Remember, when creating a comic strip we use minimum text and try to make the content as clear as possible using images and speech.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Before using the Start my comic strip online activity below please ask you parent/carer to set up for this activity. If you do not wish to use this online resource, you can complete the task using pencil and paper.

Start my comic strip

  • First, watch the video and make your notes. Remember, to focus on key aspects of Ellen MacArthur’s journey around the world. Have to hand your notes from the previous activity too.
  • Online – If you are using the online comic strip resource, click the button to start your comic strip about Ellen MacArthur’s journey around the world. Make sure you add backgrounds, characters and speech bubbles. You can include some text but keep this to a minimum. Refer to the example comic strip to help you. Save your comic strip ready to share with your teacher.
  • On paper – If using pencil and paper you divide your paper into six columns, so you use one column for each part of your comic strip. Make sure you add backgrounds, characters and speech bubbles. You can include some text but keep this to a minimum. Refer to the example comic strip below to help you.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can make a comic strip of Ellen MacArthur’s journey.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
