Y2 > English > Science_Technology > ICT > Oracy – The Journey of Ellen MacArthur Part 1

Lesson by Jasmine Langdon

Learning Intentions:

  • To speak clearly whilst in the role of Ellen MacArthur.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity requires the use of a laptop, tablet or mobile phone etc to complete.

In this activity there is a short introductory video, approximately one minute long, and a further video about the life of Ellen MacArthur, approximately five minutes long.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

You will be learning about Dame Ellen MacArthur. You will watch a video about her life and take notes of interesting details and events and then pretend to be her to film your own video diary.

Ellen MacArthur was the first female to sail around the world single-handedly in 2005. Her journey began in France and she successfully made it back in 71 days. Watch the video below to find out more about Ellen and her life, and make notes while you watch. (This video is about four minutes long.) You will need these for the next activity. Feel free to pause the video as you watch to give yourself more time to make your notes. These can be done on plain paper but don’t have to be neat and tidy – their purpose is to help you plan the next step.

Watch the video below to learn about Ellen’s life and why she is well-known.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

  • Watch the video above and make notes of interesting facts and details.
  • Pretend that you are Ellen MacArthur and you have been asked to create a video talking about your life and career.
  • Use the facts/notes that you have written about her to help you prepare and perform a short video talking about yourself (as Ellen).
  • You could write a script if you want to but speaking in character is the focus of this activity. Remember, you need to make your video interesting to watch to ‘hook’ your audience. Try to vary your expression and use interesting vocabulary: challenge yourselves.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can make a speech about the life of Ellen MacArthur as if I am Ellen.

Look at the learning intentions ‘how well do you think you have done?’

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2

You could use the app ‘Morfo’ to make your video more interesting. You could add an image of Ellen MacArthur and record your audio presentation so that it looks like she is really talking. Watch the quick tutorial below for an idea of how to use this app!
