Y3 > English > Expressive_Arts > Art > Congo Rainforest – Homes of the Rainforest

Lesson by Rachel Adams

Learning Intentions:

  • To compare the similarities and differences between your own home and the homes within a tribal village.
  • To design your own rainforest home.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity you will need to watch a short video approximately three minutes long to support your child’s learning. Your child might also like to do some additional research. The main activities can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

The Congo Rainforest is in central Africa. It is the second largest rainforest after the Amazon. The Congo Rainforest is home to many millions of people with two thirds of them relying on the rainforest for food and jobs.

Watch the following clip that shows you a typical house from the Congo Rainforest.

Think about how their houses compare to yours.

  • What are they made of?
  • Are their houses attached to another?
  • How many rooms are in their houses?
  • Do you think machinery was used to build their houses?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1: Use what you have found out from the clip or your own research to design a rainforest home.

  • Draw your design.
  • Label your design with the materials you would use.
  • Evaluate your designs. What do you like? What would you change?

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2: Build a model of a rainforest home.
