Lesson by Alison Jones

Learning Intentions:

  • To follow a recipe to make ice cream.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This is a cooking activity that will need to be supervised by an adult.

There is a short video to help set the scene for this activity. (Approximately three minutes)

The recipe is presented as a six page PowerPoint.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Today we are going to make some ice cream. You will learn how to make strawberry ripple and chocolate chip ice cream, but once you know how to make the basic ice cream mix you can create your own flavours. Let’s start by thinking about some flavour combinations with this fun song.  Click on the link below.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Making Ice cream

Requires adult support

Follow the recipe below to make your ice cream. This activity is about cooking together, with your child doing as much as possible with your support.

You will need a bowl, measuring jug, tin opener, a whisk hand or electric, teaspoon, tablespoon, and plastic containers for your ice cream.

  • First and most importantly wash your hands.
  • Measure out the ingredients
  • Allow them to whisk the ingredients together if using a hand whisk you will probably want to take turns. If using an electric mixer, you will need to help your child to ensure they are using it safely.
  • Let your child mix in any flavourings and spoon the mixture into the containers.
  • Put the ice cream into the freezer for four hours to set.
  • Don’t forget to get your child to help clear and wash up.
  • Enjoy eating your ice cream.
