Y3 > English > Science_Technology > ICT > Data handling – Garden bird watch

Lesson by Rhian Bruce

Learning Intentions:

  • To identify and learn the names of various garden birds.
  • To collect data using a tally chart.
  • To create a bar chart on paper or pie chart using j2data.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This is a bird watch activity that you can do either from a window or by sitting quietly in your garden. Your child will need to observe for the same amount of time each day e.g half an hour every day for a week. There are a couple of attached information sheets to support this activity. If you have access to a printer it might be helpful to print them out.

The main part of this activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This task will help you to learn the names of the birds that visit your garden. You will learn to identify the birds and then create a tally chart to start recording how often you see each type of bird over the course of a week.

  • Look at the bird identification chart. How many of each species of bird are you able to spot in your garden over the course of a week?

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

  • First, look at the identification chart and choose five or more birds to look for in your garden. Remember to choose birds that you know visit your garden/outdoor space
  • Next, create a chart like the one in the example given.
  • Decide what time you are going to sit and watch for birds in your garden. You will need at least 30 minutes each day. It is best to choose the same time each day.
  • Record your results over a week.
  • Create a bar chart or a pie chart to show your results. This can be done on paper or on j2data.
  • Analyse your results e.g Ask yourself why some birds appeared more than others, which was the most common, which was the least common etc.
  • Write a conclusion based on your analysis.

Activity 2 – This activity will require you to print out the Bird Top Trump cards below.

Use the Top Trump Cards to have a game. This will help you to learn the names of the birds really quickly.
