Learning Intentions:
Drawing and labelling parts of a flower.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
To complete this lesson, you will need some plain paper to sketch on and coloured pencils. You will need to be online to play the video clips but after that this task can be completed indoors or in your garden.
As a challenge during your daily walk you can count different flower species.
There is also a link to BBC Bitesize at the bottom of the page to explain why bees are attracted to flowers.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Flowers are essential as not only do they look pretty in our gardens but they also feed birds, insects and animals. Today’s lesson will aim to teach you all about the parts of a flower and the role that each part plays in the flower’s growth. Watch the clip below carefully and take notes if you wish.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
- Firstly, play the introductory video as this will explain today’s task.
- Then watch a small clip which shows you exactly where you will find all the parts of a flower. It will also explain what each part of the flower is used for.
- Now, choose and draw in detail your favourite flower or copy a flower from your garden.
- Label your flower. REMEMBER to refer back to the video clip on labelling a flower to help you.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
Activity 2
As part of your daily walk why not go on a nature walk with your family and look for different flowers.
See how many different flowers you can find.
You could record this in a tally chart. Can you name them?
In addition, it would be lovely to draw them and add each flower to your earlier sketch.
