Y4 > English > Humanities > Geography > Data handling – Rainforest climate data

Lesson by Steph Watton

Learning Intentions:

  • To investigate the climate of the rainforest and compare to a location in Wales.
  • To use data to make comparisons.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity you will be comparing the temperature and rainfall in Manaus and Pembroke.

There is a short introductory video which is approximately two minutes long.

There is also some data to be viewed online. If you have a printer you could print this out. If you don’t have a printer your child will need access to view the document while they complete the main activity.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Tropical rainforests are situated near the Equator line between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn. The rainforest data that you will study today will be based in Manaus in the Amazon rainforest. On average, the rainforest will experience around 200 days of rain.  Watch this video link below which describes what the climate is like in a rainforest.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

For this activity you will need to refer to the information below. If you have a printer you could print out the document below. If you don’t have a printer you will need to be able to view the information online while you work through the questions.

Answer the questions about rainfall.

Remember to write your answers using full sentences so that they make sense to the reader.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can make comparisons using data

Success criteria #2:  I can draw sensible conclusions from data

Success criteria #3:  I can present my conclusions clearly

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2

Using the data for activity 1 create graphs for rainfall and temperature using J2e5

  • Go on to J2e5 and create a table
  • Enter the data separately for each location.
  • You will end up with four different graphs.
  • Usually, temperature is represented by a line graph, while rainfall is shown in the form of a bar graph.
  • The x- axis will have to represent the different months of the year, while the y- axis will show the temperatures or rainfall.
  • Don’t forget to give your graph a title.
