Y4 > English > Humanities > Geography > Persuasive writing – Deforestation

Lesson by Rachel Adams

Learning Intentions:

  • To understand the effects of deforestation.
  • To be able to use persuasive language effectively.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity children will need to create a poster to persuade people to put a stop to deforestation.

They will firstly need to watch a video clip to gain an understanding of what deforestation is and its effects (approximately two minutes). They may want to complete their own research about the effects on the rainforests. They will then need to watch another clip (approximately four minutes) to familiarise themselves with persuasive language.

The second part of this activity can be completed on/offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Deforestation is a particular concern in tropical rainforests because these forests are home to much of the world’s plants and animals.

You are going to have to create a poster to persuade people to stop deforestation of the rainforests.

Watch the following clip to gain an understanding of what deforestation is and its effects. You will need to make notes.

Think about:

  • The effects deforestation is having.
  • What people can do so that deforestation can be avoided.

Watch the following video clip to find out more about deforestation. You may want to do your own research to find out more facts about deforestation of the rainforests.

On your poster you need to use persuasive techniques to persuade people to stop deforestation. Watch the following clip to remind yourself of the language you need to use.

How to write a persuasive text.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Create a poster to persuade people to stop deforestation of the rainforests.

  • Think of a title that implies a point of view. For example “Stop Deforestation”.
  • Include lots of factual information on your poster to support stopping deforestation.
  • What effect is deforestation having?
  • What can we do to help?

Try to include:

  • Powerful adjectives.
  • Connectives – however, therefore…
  • Persuasive language – without a doubt, obviously…
  • Rhetorical questions – a question that makes the reader think but doesn’t require an answer.
  • Remember to make your poster bright and colourful.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
