Lesson by Maria Cox

Learning Intentions:

To understand what Fairtrade is and to learn about the story of cotton.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity is about Fairtrade cotton. Fairtrade is trade (buying and selling) between companies in developed countries like the UK and workers/farmers in developing countries in which fair prices are paid to them. You may be familiar with the Fairtrade logo. Have you seen this logo before and if so where?

This activity requires watching a 12 minute video.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Watch the video below of the story of cotton. You may want to take notes or watch a second time. Click to watch video

Now I would like you to recreate the story using a comic strip/story board.

 create a storyboard/comic online

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

  1. Watch the video on the story of cotton.
  2. Take notes and watch again if required.
  3. Create storyboard/comic strip about the stages of cotton production and upload to hwb.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Challenge: present a video of yourself talking about the story of cotton – use your story board as a guide. You can use J2e5 to create a video or you could just upload a video to hwb/seesaw.
