Let’s start by finding out the science behind what makes a cake rise. Click on the link below.
Today we are going to make a strawberry layer cake. Remember from the science that you have just heard you need to beat in the air when you cream together the margarine and the sugar. Then you need to gently mix in the egg and the flour to keep as much air in as you can.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 – Making a Strawberry layer cake
Requires adult support
Follow the recipe below to make your layer cake. This activity is about cooking together, with your child doing as much as possible with your support.
Gather together all the equipment and ingredients that you will need.

- First and most importantly wash your hands.
- Weigh out all the ingredients.
- Follow the recipe to make the layer cake.
- WARNING – The adult must put the cakes into the oven and take them out when they are cooked.
- Take care because the cake and tins will be hot when they first come out of the oven.
- An adult should turn the cakes out onto the cooling rack, as they will be very hot.
- Don’t forget to help clear and wash up.
Enjoy a slice of cake with a glass of milk don’t forget to share your cake with your family.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
