Y4 > English > Science_Technology > ICT > Coding without using a computer

Lesson by Maria Cox

Learning Intentions:

  • To understand the process of coding.
  • To develop resilience through trial and error.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a video approximately two minutes long. There are also five short videos with instructions on unplugged activities to do with a family member.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Unplugged coding activities are activities where pupils complete a task without computer kits/devices. They are physical tasks which involves a set of Instructions (algorithms). If you are unsure what coding is, watch this video below.

Below you can choose from a list of quick unplugged activities you can play with a family member.

The following unplugged activities are explained in the You Tube videos.

Blindfold challenge – pairs –direct person around the house/garden or complete a maze as seen in the video below. (blindfold maze attached)

Clap patterns –create patterns that can be repeated. Watch this to find out more.

Crazy character algorithms– draw a simple picture and give partner instructions to complete the same image.

Tangrams – using shapes to create an image and give partner instructions to complete the same image. (template attached – Tangrams)

Lego building algorithm activity. Give instructions to create a lego object.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

  • Watch the ‘What is coding’ video.
  • Watch the video links for each of the activities. Choose an activity and complete. Maybe you could video the activity and upload to hwb/J2launch/Seesaw for your teacher to see.

Activity 2 (optional)

Create your own unplugged activities.

The video links below can help:

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I understand what coding is.

Success criteria #2:  I can complete a coding unplugged activity.

Success criteria #3:  I can create a coding unplugged activity,
