Learning Intentions:
- To understand the importance of bees in the world.
- To write a paragraph on why bees are important.
- To write an imaginative story.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
In this activity there are three video clips (approximately ten minutes in total). The first video supports activity one and the rest support activity two.
The activities can be completed on or offline and on different days.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Although honey bees aren’t listed as an endangered species, they could still be at risk. Both wild and domesticated bees suffer from sprayed chemicals and parasites. Bees are seen by most people as the fuzzy flying insects seen darting among the flowers during the warmer months, but bees are actually so much more than this. They have an important part to play in maintaining our planet. Where trees and woods are essential to filter our air, bees are vital to both pollinate the food we need to survive and pollinate many of the trees and flowers that provide habitats for wildlife.
Watch the video below which tells us why bees are important.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
Write about why you think honey bees are important.
You can choose how you present your information.
Activity 2
Below are trailers of the film ‘The Bee Movie’. A bee called Barry B. Benson is working at Honex where they make honey. When he flies outside the hive, he meets a human florist from New York City named Vanessa Bloome, and suddenly, Barry finds out humans eat honey, he plans to sue them. But what will this mean if bees didn’t work and pollinate flowers?
- After watching the trailers of the film think about what would happen if bees didn’t work and pollinate flowers.
- Write a short story about when the bees decided not to work.
- Use your imagination and be as creative as you like.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
