Learning Intentions:

  • To learn about the origins of popular artwork in other countries.
  • To understand how to draw a self-portrait or a character using the Japanese Manga style.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

In this activity there is a PowerPoint, information text and a short video (approximately four minutes) which your child will need to view online before completing the activities.

The activities can be completed offline over several sessions.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

In this activity you will be learning to draw animation in the style of Manga or Anime. It is an artwork that has its origins in Japan. It is the artwork that is used in many popular cartoon animations such as Pokemon.

First, you will need to read some information about Manga and Anime.

Now, look through the PowerPoint and have a look at all the different examples of Manga characters. Look at the features carefully.

Next, watch the short video clip which will show you how to draw a character in the Manga style.

 

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

To create a self-portrait in a Manga style.

  • Look at your facial features in a mirror
  • Use the whole of an A4 page for your portrait
  • Remember to use the Manga style for your facial features
  • Use tone in your portrait (e.g. light and shade using a pencil and colour blending)

Activity 2

To create a Superhero character, this could be based on someone you know or imaginary.

  • Use the whole of an A4 page for your portrait
  • Remember to use the Manga style superhero’s features
  • Use tone in your portrait (e.g. light and shade using a pencil and colour blending)

Activity 3

Draft a short story (no more than 100 words) based on your Superhero.

Now make a comic strip from your draft

Create a front cover for your comic.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

 

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can use the Manga style to draw a self-portrait.

Success criteria #2:  I can create a Superhero in the Manga style.

Success criteria #3:  I can create a comic strip in the Manga style.
