Lesson by Nicole White
Learning Intentions:
- To create a collage in the style of Hokusai
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
In this activity there is one piece of artwork to view online.
The main activity can be completed offline.
You will need collage resources, such as old magazines or coloured paper, glue and a large sheet of paper.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
Look at the piece of artwork below. It is called ‘The Great Wave off Kanagawa’ and it is by the Japanese artist Hokusai.
In the artwork, you can see an enormous wave threatening three boats off the coast of the town of Kanagawa, while Mount Fuji rises in the background.
Study the artwork carefully. Can you spot:
- The sailors
- Three boats
- Mount Fuji
What do you think about the ‘The Great Wave’?
What do you like/dislike? Why?
How does it make you feel?
What is the significance of Mount Fuji?
Seeing Mount Fuji in the background tells us that ‘The Great Wave’ is set in Japan. Can you think of somewhere in Pembrokeshire that can be just as identifiable?
Your task today will be to recreate this piece of artwork in the form of a collage set in Pembrokeshire.
- A collage is a piece of art made by sticking various forms of materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric on to paper to create a picture or pattern.
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
Before you start, you will need to prepare what you are going to do and consider the following:
- What materials and tools will you need?
- How will you make sure that your artwork looks like ‘The Great Wave’?
- How will you add your own twist on the artwork to make it your own?
- Consider what Pembrokeshire feature you might change Mount Fuji to in the background.
Sketch the outline in pencil.
Start your collage.
Use a range of materials with different tones (lightness or darkness of colour) to your collage.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can create a collage in the style of Hokusai.
Success criteria #2: I can use a Pembrokeshire feature in a collage.
Success criteria #3: I can form an opinion about a piece of art.
