Y5 > English > Health_Wellbeing > PE > Human Body – How the lungs work

Lesson by Ricky Bowen

Learning Intentions:

  • To develop the pupils’ understanding of the lungs, how they work and what happens when we exercise.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

These activities can be completed over two days.  Each activity involves watching a video approximately five minutes long. Pupils will take part in some physical activity (you will need a stopwatch) keep a record of breathing rate (scientifically known as respiratory rate) and make a model of the lungs. This can be completed every-day for a week and the results recorded.

The record can be recorded on paper or using ICT.

To make the model lungs you will need:

  • An empty 500ml bottle
  • a straw
  • two balloons
  • scissors
  • tape
  • Plasticine or Bu-tac
  • pencil

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

This activity needs to be completed over two days and involves some physical activity.

On day one watch the video below:

On day two watch the video below:

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

On day one watch the first video:

  • Make notes on the video and write a brief summary.
  • Count how many times you breath in one minute (inhaling (in) and exhaling (out) count as one breath)
  • Run on the spot as fast as you can for one minute. Record how many breaths you take in one minute immediately after exercise.
  • You can repeat the exercise daily for one week to see if your respiratory rate decreases and you feel less out of breath. Record all of the data in a table. Do not forget to count how many times you breathe before you exercise. Of course, there are lots of other exercises that you can do without using too much space (star jumps, burpees etc).
  • Using paper or ICT, create a graph to show your results from Day 1. Write an explanation of your results.

Activity 2

On day two watch the second video:

  • Gather your materials/resources.
  • Open the link and follow the instructions set out.

OPEN THE LINK TO FIND OUT HOW TO MAKE A MODEL OF LUNGS

  • Try them out.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
