Lesson by Rhian Bruce

Learning Intentions:

  • To identify and locate persuasive features in an advertisement.
  • To think about equality and the power of images.
  • To create and design a product.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

There is a short video (approximately two and half minutes) and a twelve page PowerPoint to support the learning which includes another short video (approximately one minute). The main activity can be completed on or offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

In this task, you will be looking at products advertised in the 1960s. You will be looking for persuasive devices used and thinking about how products were advertised. You will also be thinking about equality and how people and images were used in the 1960s.Watch the video on the link below to see how advertising has developed.

how adverts have evolved since the 1960s

Look at the Power Point on 1960s adverts. Think about how the features of persuasive devices are being used. How are adverts similar/different today?

At the end of the lesson you will be asked to invent and design a product of your own for 2020.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1 – Product design

Try and think about what products people in 2020 need.

  • Design a product and create an advert for it.
  • Think about ways to ensure that your new product will not harm the environment in any way.
  • Make sure the advert appeals to both boys and girls in an equal way.
  • Your advert can be presented on paper or as a video.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can develop my ideas with a sense of purpose and audience.

Success criteria #2:  I can create taking account of equality and sustainability.

Success criteria #3:  I can gather information independently and use it to help generate a few ideas.

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2

  • Create a list of products that are still around today that were advertised in the 1960s. Create a timeline of images to show how the product design has changed e.g Coca Cola, McDonald’s, Hoover, the Mini car, Levi jeans, video games consoles.
  • How do you think the product you have chosen will have changed by 2040? Can you draw a picture of what you think it will look like then?
