Lesson by Chris Griffiths

Learning Intentions:

  • To use and create a branching database

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

The purpose of this activity is for the children to learn about how branching databases are created and the benefit of them to help identify different types of species.

There is a short online game for you to complete about branching databases.

This activity will consist of several short learning activities which can be completed on or offline followed by a practical activity which will involve creating a branching database.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

A branching database is a way of sorting and identifying different species and objects. It works by asking a series of yes or no questions, which the user must answer in order to find the name/image of the object.

Click on the link below to have a go at using a simple one.

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

As a warm-up try completing this short activity. Don’t forget to think about questions which will help identify and split the choices.

Activity 2

View the document ‘Identification Key’ below and see if you can find the names of each of the different pond animals.

  • Create and design you own branching database about a topic of your choice. This can be done either using J2Data or on large paper at home.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 5.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can use a branching database to identify different species.

Success criteria #2:  I can create a branching database using yes/no questions.

Success criteria #3:  I can gather and research information.
