Learning Intentions:
- To learn facts about each of the planets in the Solar System.
- To create a mnemonic.
- To complete a fact file using information gathered.
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
There are three short video clips (approximately four minutes in total) one in step two as an introduction to the topic. The other two support activity 2.As part of activity one there is a 23 page PowerPoint to support the learning with tasks within it to complete.
The main activities are a combination of on and offline.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
In this activity you will be learning all about the planets in our solar system. You will be gathering facts and information about each of the planets to create a fact file. You will also be learning about mnemonics (a system where you use a pattern of letters to help you to remember something.
- Start by watching this short video about our solar system.
- Can you name the planets in our solar system?
- Do you know any facts about the planets?
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1 – Fact file
- Look at the PowerPoint to learn more about each of the individual planets and complete the tasks as you go along. Remember to make notes for your fact file as you read through the information on the planets.
- Now write a fact file about the solar system or one individual planet.
Activity 2 – Mnemonic
- Watch these two short video clips to learn about mnemonics and how helpful they can be to remember the order of letters.
- Create your own mnemonic to remember the order of the planets.
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can write my own mnemonic.
Success criteria #2: I can gather information on the planets and present information in a clear way.
Success criteria #3: I can order the planets.
