Learning Intentions:
To learn how to use google sheet to make sensible financial decisions
Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils
To complete this activity your child will need to watch three videos that give instructions on how to use Google sheet (Spreadsheet). (Approximately seven minutes).It would be beneficial to print off the information sheet on mobile phones if you can’t your child will need to make notes of relevant information and will need to revisit this sheet.
This is an online activity.
Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information
In this task, you are going to learn how to use a Google sheet to organise data and information about financial purchases. As you get older, you will make many financial decisions which are very important and will significantly impact your life. Ensuring that you have all of the data and information for these will help you to make sure that you make the right choices.Today you will be working out the cost of a mobile phone.
Watch the three short videos below before starting the activity. The videos, explained how you should set out your information and how you can use formulas.

Below are some examples of mobile phones offers to help you with this activity.
Most websites will offer you the following information about a mobile phone:
– Model Name
– Camera Information
– Storage
– Screen Size
– Colours Available
– Cost Per Month
– Contract Term
– Total Contract Cost
– Upfront Cost
How can we compare all of these confusing and complicated deals?
What features of the phone are important to you?
How much would you be willing to spend?
Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity
Activity 1
- Set up your Google sheet to include the important information as shown in the video.
- Look at the resource sheet again.
- Input relevant information into your google sheet.
Activity 2
Use formula in your Google sheet to help you answer the following questions:
- Which deal would you take and why?
- If you had a very limited budget, which deal would you go for and Why?
- If you had been given a large amount of money for a birthday, which deal would you go for, pay monthly or pay upfront and why?
- Why do you think people pay for items monthly?
Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.
Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:
Success criteria #1: I can input information onto a Google sheet.
Success criteria #2: I can problem solve using a spreadsheet.
Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)
Activity 3
Plan a dream holiday.
Use a google sheet to calculate the different costs for different locations. You could use the internet to gather information. You might include information such as:
- Cost of the flights
- Cost of the hotels
- Cost of hiring a car
- Food budget.
