  • To identify the impact of plastic pollution on our oceans.
  • To carryout out a survey.

Step 1: Activity overview for parent, carers and pupils

This activity has a short four minute video illustrating the impact of plastic pollution within the ocean.

There is a one page grid to either download or copy.

The main activity can be completed offline.

Step 2: Introduction to the activity and additional information

Plastic pollution is an increasing problem facing every ocean throughout the world. There is an impact of single use plastic on eco-systems, the environment and general appearance of localities.

Take a look at this short clip illustrating some of the issues plastic pollution is causing in our oceans and then carryout the tasks below.

 

Step 3: Tasks to carry out for this activity

Activity 1

Identify different types of single use plastic that are used in your household

  • Create a table either through Excel or use the one provided to record how many items of single use plastic is used each day in your household.
  • Create a graph to illustrate your findings either on or offline.
  • Explain how you as a family could help to reduce the use of single use plastic based on what is being used in the house currently.

Once you have completed the task you can email anything you create (photos, documents, screenshots etc.) directly to your teacher or directly upload it to any of the available places in Step 6.

Step 4: Look over the success criteria for this activity:

Success criteria #1:  I can identify types of single use plastic.

Success criteria #2:  I can carry out a survey and graph results.

Success criteria #3:  I can explain and suggest ways to change behaviour.

 

Step 5: Extension and follow on activities/challenges (optional)

Activity 2

Create a short video using images and sound about plastic pollution.
